If your company has asked you to work from a new office, or you are changing employers altogether and need to move to be closer to your new job, you will need to relocate. Relocation can be quite involved, especially if you have a family to move with you, and it will help if you can plan ahead.
1. Confirm your relocation package
In most cases, whether you are staying with an existing employer or moving jobs, you will be entitled to a relocation package. You should make sure you confirm how much your relocation package is worth, and how it can be spent. Some companies may make a fixed sum available for you to spend as you wish, whilst others will offer to pay for specific items, such as removal costs, or travel costs until you find a new home. It's important that you know exactly what sort of relocation package you have before you start to plan.
2. Decide what to do with your home
What you choose to do with your current home largely depends on the nature of your relocation. If you're working from a new office for a fixed period – 2 years for example – you may choose to rent out your property so that you have a house to return to. On the other hand, if you know that this new role is permanent, it may be wiser to sell your house and buy a new one that's closer to your job. It's important that you sell your house as quickly as possible so that you can find somewhere new.
3. Find new schools
If you have children, you will need to make sure they have places at new schools. You will need to get prospectuses and information for the schools that you are interested in, and visit them with your children if possible. Apply for places either directly with the school or through the Local Education Authority.
4. Consider timing
When do you need to start your new job? Can you relocate in time, or will you need to find temporary accommodation until your family can move down? It's always advisable for children to finish the year, or at least the term, in their current school, and your partner may also have to give a certain period of notice for their work. You need to take all these things into account.
5. Think positive
Relocation can be an incredibly positive experience. Rather than thinking about leaving family and friends, and an area you're comfortable with, think about the new experiences you can have in your next location. A positive attitude to relocation helps to make the whole process more successful and will help you to enjoy your new life as well as your new job.
